The story of Jonah is one of the most remarkable stories in the bible. The idea of a man running from God and getting swallowed by a giant fish certainly does tickle the imagination. But does this ancient fish tale have anything to say to us today? Even though this story is old, it teaches us some very important lessons. The same God who called on Jonah still calls on us today. And when we run from him, just like Jonah did, we may find ourselves facing a storm we can’t outrun. God’s mercy that was given first to Jonah and then to the Ninevites is also available for us. He gives us second chances just as he did for Jonah. We may even learn something about our hidden prejudices that keep us from extending that mercy to others. We have many lessons to learn from this rebellious prophet. Let’s read Jonah’s story with our eyes open and our hearts willing to hear a fresh take on this ancient book.
