Loving Our City

This past Saturday our women’s ministry gathered together to prepare Easter baskets for some of the city employees in Vestavia Hills.  The entire church participated by bringing in many different snacks that could be used for the baskets. After a meal and a time of sharing and praying for one another, the ladies got to work. Each basket was filled to capacity and wrapped in cellophane. In addition, a nice thank you note was attached to the baskets.

A few of the ladies stayed so that they could make deliveries that day. With all of the baskets and volunteers loaded on the Horizon Church bus, they stopped at three fire stations and the police department for our city. At each stop the first responders were so appreciative of the kindness from our church family. When the delivery was made at the police station, the officer who received the baskets assured the ladies that the other policemen “would go through them like a buzz saw!” Another basket was prepared for the Mayor’s office at city hall which was delivered the next week once the offices were open. After delivery they called the church to show their appreciation for such thoughtfulness.

It only takes a small gesture to remind people that they are loved and cared for. Our church regularly prays for our community and those who serve it. We are grateful to be a part of such a great city and it is wonderful to have so many people in our church who care enough to demonstrate love for our city employees.

Don’t forget to show your appreciation to the people who make your life better. Let them know how much they mean to you.  It doesn’t take much to simply say thank you or offer some kind of gift of gratitude.

Always be joyful.  Never stop praying.  Be thankful in all circumstances, for this is God’s will for you who belong to Christ Jesus.  —1 Thessalonians 5:16-18 (NLT)
